Source As RutOS plays a significant role in our success, our R&D people continue to strive and undertake the mission of making it even better than last time. And with the countdown to the end of 2022, we’re very excited to introduce you to the newest version of RutOS – 7.03! So let’s finish this year with a bang and take a glance at the new and improved operating system features we’ve prepared for you. HIGH-LEVEL SECURITY CONTINUES TO THRIVE We want each of our clients to be entirely confident about the security of our devices. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to improve the system’s security and make it invulnerable to any external threats. With the latest RutOS version, you can continue to expect precisely that. We’ve added many security upgrades, including brute force prevention support to MQTT and Post/Get services, SSH session timeout, and OpenSSH SFTP support. The password hashing algorithm was also updated from MD5 to SHA512. If you want to learn even more about the security of RutOS, check out this article about its base and public availability. OPC UA, BACNET, AND NTRIP SERVICES Our R&D team has implemented three new and significant protocols in our RutOS: the OPC UA, BACnet, and NTRIP. OPC UA protocol enables widely-ranging industrial equipment to exchange data with systems like clouds. As most platforms support the OPC UA protocol, this addition to RutOS 7.03 gives you more flexibility, interconnectivity, and scalability. It also grants a uniform information exchange between your solution’s equipment, regardless of its size. The OPC UA protocol is especially relevant for those working in the industrial & automation and energy & utility industries. BACnet is a data communication protocol that enables different building automation devices to exchange data without having to switch to other operating or control systems. This is a major advancement, as previous to this protocol, devices for specific services weren’t interchangeable with one another, making data gathering more expensive and complex. This protocol is supported by our TRB142, TRB145, TRB2 series, RUT955, and RUT956 devices. We’re also happy to announce that the NTRIP protocol is now available with the new RutOS 7.03 version. Thanks to this protocol, streaming GNSS data can now be achieved with greater coordinate precision using our devices. This addition is particularly relevant for industries like the agriculture sector, which aims to achieve farm automation. With NTRIP protocol support, our devices with a GPS can enable remote monitoring and data transmission between equipment like autonomous tractors or seeding robots. OUR RUTOS HAS BECOME MULTILINGUAL Previous RutOS versions were available only in English and German, but this is changing with the new 7.03 version.  We’re well aware of our ever-growing RutOS multilingual audience, so to make the system even more user-friendly, we’re happy to say Merhaba, Hola, and Olá to our Turkish, Spanish, and Portuguese speakers! That’s right, the newest RutOS version is enhanced with three new languages, and we’ve also revamped the German version. Importantly, we’d like to announce that RutOS will also be available in Japanese in the near future! This huge achievement will undoubtedly enhance the experience of our Japanese-speaking clients and allow us to be closer to them on a new level. DETAILS MAKING A BIG DIFFERENCE We pay attention to your needs, so from this update on, RutOS will include an email relay package! The package offers two functionalities: you can use it as your router’s email server, which is perfect for small office solutions, or as a proxy server. The latter can function as an intermediary between your network and the Internet. How so? By filtering incoming and outgoing email traffic and rejecting or forwarding each email based on preconfigured rules. Another bonus point that comes with RutOS 7.03 is a new Hotspot page for registered user management. On this page, you’ll now be able to see all information about currently logged-in end users and, if needed, unregister them from the user list. This update is supported by devices with Wi-Fi functionality. In other Hotspot-related news, with the latest RutOS version, RUT300, RUTX08, and RUTX09 acquired Hotspot functionality . NOTABLE MENTIONS From this RutOS version forward, you can install on your fundamental Java applications into our devices! And while this update is still in its early stages, we feel it’s important to present our system’s ever-increasing customization opportunities. We’ve got great news for developers and network enthusiasts: with the 7.03 update comes another upgrade – we’ve advanced our FTP server support’s security. With such improvement, we’ve felt the need to give it a new and appropriate name: Secure File Transfer Protocol, or SFTP for short! Due to high demand from our clients, we’ve improved our Firewall DMZ page, which will help our clients establish port forwarding more easily than ever. Previous RutOS versions contained three Modbus protocols: TCP, Serial Master, and TCP Slave. We’re excited to announce a new addition to this list: the Modbus RTU Slave protocol. This protocol will allow your master devices to collect data from slave devices with greater speeds and enhanced efficiency. The latest RutOS version opens up tons of new implementation possibilities and greater management proficiency, which is exactly what we were aiming to enable for the upcoming year's projects and solutions! If you want to know the entire list of changes and access a full changelog, choose Firmware Downloads under a respective product name in our Wiki Knowledge Base, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

  • TELTONIKA TRB142 RS232 - SMART GRID & SUBSTATIONCOMMUNICATION

Back Front CHALLENGE Fundamentally, energy infrastructure consists of production & transmission. Nuclear, coal, gas energy plants and renewable energy installations together generate electricity and transmit it to the grid using series of high, medium and low voltage stations and substations eventually bringing power to homes and businesses around the world. All steps of production and transmission must be closely monitored and controlled to make sure the infrastructure is producing enough power that is distributed efficiently throughout the energy network. All of this would not be possible if all components of the grid would not be connected and controlled centrally by professional engineers and advanced SCADA systems. Substations have complex automation network that is managed by a substation controller. To enable smart grid, these must be connected to the central SCADA system via the Internet. Even when wired Internet connectivity is available, it is impossible to ensure 100% uptime which is required to be in control of the whole power generation and transmission infrastructure. SOLUTION Integrators and energy operators around the world have recognized that cellular solutions, such as 4G LTE enabled gateways and routers, offer the most reliable connectivity and best availability for their complex substation systems. In many cases, substation controllers aren’t new, meaning that they feature serial interfaces for communication, such as RS232. TRB142 is a 4G LTE Cat1 enabled cellular gateway by Teltonika Networks able to connect legacy equipment via serial RS232 and manage connectivity with numerous industrial and networking protocols, such as Modbus RTU & MQTT. It also has advanced firmware security functions, such as firewall and multiple supported VPN services. Moreover, TRB142 can diagnose any connectivity and functionality issues and reboot separate modules of the gateway to restore service automatically without any interference from the operators. BENEFITS TRB142 is easy to set up, easy to install and even easier to maintain with full support for Teltonika Remote Management System. It is also simple to scale as multiple devices can be configured at once using RMS. This gateway is very reasonably priced and features robust 4G LTE Cat1 – designed for serial interface communication where low data speeds are required. Advanced firmware functionality includes support for industrial, networking and remote management protocols, such as Modbus RTU, MQTT, DHCP, SNMP and features firewall and multiple supported VPN services.

  • TELTONIKA TRB145 REMOTE MONITORING OF OIL & GASPIPELINES

Back Front CHALLENGE Extraction of energy from oil and gas sources is a complex process which requires a lot of infrastructure. One part of such infrastructure are the pipelines which are the key transport mechanism for Oil & Gas industries. They provide a safe, efficient, and cost-effective way to transport processed and unprocessed materials and operate continuously outside of scheduled maintenance windows. To preemptively diagnose possible safety and/or productivity issues the rate of the flow of materials must be closely monitored. However, pipeline infrastructure is usually placed in remote areas where wired Internet connectivity is not available SOLUTION Satellite communications are still highly expensive, however global expansion of 4G LTE coverage enables Oil & Gas companies to implement a wide pipeline flow monitoring network by using dedicated flow meters which output data using industrial protocols. In many cases – serial communication with RS-485 and Modbus industrial protocol is used. The data generated by the flow meter must be obtained and forwarded to control centers, SCADA systems to aggregate and interpret centrally. TRB145 Serial IoT Gateway by Teltonika Networks is perfect for such applications - with RS-485 interface, Modbus RTU Master functionality and 4G LTE Cat1 it is able to periodically read flow meter information and send gathered data to remote HTTP/HTTPS servers or various IoT platforms using MQTT. Finally, wide power supply range and low energy consumption allows TRB145 to be powered up by combining solar power and batteries. BENEFITS Low-cost and quick to deploy – multiple TRBs can be simultaneously configured immediately using Teltonika Remote Management System (RMS). High availability and low data cost – 4G LTE is highly available globally and cost efficient due to low amounts of data needed for this application. Data security – TRB145 supports advanced data protection with embedded Firewall and encryption with multiple VPN services available, such as OpenVPN, IPsec, PPTP, L2TP and others. Immediate notifications – if preset flow values fall out of defined criteria, system operators can setup TRB145 to receive immediate alarms.

  • TELTONIKA RUT360 OPTIMIZED USE OF RESOURCES IN HVAC SYSTEMS

CHALLENGE HVAC systems are quite complicated in the sense that they have many different components that are all interrelated. If one of them stops functioning as it should, the whole system might be affected and discontinue working. While the system itself does not require internet, adding connectivity enables managing it remotely and, as such, early detection or even prevention of any issues in the system. Another challenge is related to efficiency and resource optimization. As you may imagine, such systems consume a lot of energy, and therefore making data-driven changes and automation could result in significant financial and environmental benefits. While internet connectivity is often limited in remote industrial locations, choosing a cellular router ensures a reliable connection. The only way a manufacturer or integrator can ensure their top-quality service is when the solution has a stable, uninterrupted connection. The same applies to the benefits gained by data collection - it will only be consistent if gathered continuously as opposed to intermittently. SOLUTION The Teltonika Networks RUT360 industrial cellular router connects to the HVAC system via Ethernet cable. Internet connectivity enables easy integration with the Building Management System and remote management of the HVAC infrastructure. RUT360 is an LTE Cat 6 router with Carrier Aggregation capability, making it perfect for industrial application scenarios, where the connectivity options are limited. Carrier Aggregation which comes with LTE-Advanced functionality allows to maximize bandwidth even in locations with poor signal. Even though this IoT solution does not require high data throughput, Carrier Aggregation ensures the connection is stable and reliable. The Building Management System collects data using the MQTT protocol and analyses it for predictions and optimization. The reports provide valuable insights on where energy exploitation could be reduced and allow automating processes. Remote management comes in handy for scheduling the operation of various devices and amending these schedules as per changing needs. BENEFITS Increased efficiency – data-driven decisions help cutting energy consumption and more streamlined automated operation of the HVAC system. Wide temperature range – RUT360 is a professional device in a sturdy aluminum housing, which can operate in environments from -40C to 75C. Reliable connectivity – LTE Cat 6 with Carrier Aggregation ensures a stable and reliable connection. Remote support and warranty service – remote access to their devices save travel time and finances for manufacturers as they may troubleshoot and resolve the issue from their office.

  • TELTONIKA RUT300 SECURE REMOTE ACCESIBILITY FORMANUFACTURING MACHINERY

CHALLENGE In manufacturing facilities, usually, various complicated specialized machinery and equipment are present that require trained engineers to be configured and looked after. Often, they are supplied by various vendors and if one part stops functioning as it should it may cause troubles for the whole production line and consequently - delays and losses. Besides, the recent worldwide pandemic showed that in no time a big number of employees might become temporarily unavailable due to isolation requirements and the site may lose the necessary workforce required to resolve unforeseen challenges. In such situations, secure remote accessibility and management become essential. Therefore, professional industrial networking equipment is a must to connect these machines and provide remote management, while ensuring the security and reliability of the internet connection. SOLUTION One of the biggest benefits of connecting the manufacturing machinery to the network is the ability to collect data. RUT300 industrial Ethernet router has five Ethernet ports, two configurable digital Inputs/Outputs, and a USB to easily connect the various equipment and computers to the internet. Preconfigured Firewall ensures the security of the solution from the very start and multiple top-rated VPNs provide data encryption. Data collection – for monitoring, analytics, optimization and event prediction.

  • OPEN-SOURCE CODE SECURITY: WHAT IT MEANS FOR TELTONIKA NETWORKS

Source One of the key features of our products is their software. At Teltonika Networks, we use our own, in-house software (RutOS) based on OpenWRT – which itself is an open-source code. If you’re not a computer engineer, a code being “open-source” means that it’s publicly available for inspection and scrutiny, as opposed to closed-source code being hidden and, therefore, unavailable. The software code of Teltonika Networks would not be considered open-source, as it has deviated greatly from OpenWRT on which it’s based, and we do not publicly share our code in its entirety (we share certain parts due to the GNU General Public License). However, being based on an open-source project does raise the following question: does it mean our code is less secure? In short – no. LESS IS NOT MORE In the world of security, cyber or otherwise, information is often king: the less information others have, the more secure you are. Applying this logic to the open vs. source code debate, the basic assumption is that closed-source is more secure because it isn’t directly accessible to cyber attackers. However, this assumption is incorrect – primarily because attackers don’t actually need the source code to find security vulnerabilities. This doesn’t mean the source code can be removed from the security conversation, only that it isn’t as critical an element you might assume. In addition, a skilled cyber attacker can reverse-engineer a closed-source code by a number of known tools and methods if needed, meaning that just keeping the code hidden is not a guarantee of security. It’s also important to note that being open means being more aware of your vulnerabilities and taking the necessary steps to ensure your security. These vulnerabilities can be less obvious to closed-source software, and it can be easy for its engineers to assume being closed is, by itself, a security measure, and that additional security measures are more optional than a requirement. In other words, closed-source software can get too comfortable with its closed nature. It’s for this very reason that we conduct periodic third-party security assessments, such as the recent testing performed on RutOS by NTT Security Holdings. To boost the post’s SEO, include a keyword in the title. MORE IS MORE Open-source software has a significant security benefit closed-source does not: public security. To put it simply, since open source is widely available and used, more people in the industry have the incentive to continuously ensure its security. When everyone can see the treasure, more eyes are watching for anyone trying to steal it. Vincent Rijmen, a developer of the Advanced Encryption Standard encryption algorithm, explains that open source is better for more easily spotting and fixing security vulnerabilities, “Not only because more people can look at it, but, more importantly, because the model forces people to write more clear code, and to adhere to standards. This in turn facilitates security review.” A good example of this is the Open Source Security Foundation, a cross-industry organization committed to advancing open-source security for all. Such initiatives make it so it isn’t only the source code that’s openly available, but also the tools, services, training, infrastructure, and resources needed for its security. EFFORT BEYOND CODES Security is only one of the reasons we chose to base our software on OpenWRT. Teltonika Networks’ Head of Security, Deividas Vyšniauskas, explains it best: “Stability, performance, and flexibility were also key deciding factors, as well as a positive reputation among network and security engineers alike. From that starting point, the deviation was necessary, as we wanted to create a versatile firmware with many capabilities that will meet all sorts of industry needs.” In summary, the security of open-source software isn’t a function of whether its code is open-source or closed-source. Neither type of code, by itself, are a guarantee of anything. Rather, it’s the circumstance and open nature of open-source code that drives the increased collective efforts to keep it secure. More hands work with it, and so more hands care about it. This very much resonates with us, as Teltonika Networks is founded upon the principle of connectivity for the progress of all – by all. Our software is based on open code, and we’re not merely confident in its security. We’re proud of it.
